The August edition of the Dunedin Jazz Club features Tigermoth, a six-piece ensemble who will present modern interpretations of jazz classics, featuring some of the best musicians from Christchurch. New Zealand’s very own “postmodern jukebox”, Tigermoth will surprise audiences with innovative arrangements of tunes from inside and outside the jazz genre, splicing together artists such as Louis Armstrong and Stevie Wonder. As part of the Dunedin Youth Jazz Festival (DYJF), this concert will also feature two emerging combos from Dunedin, with prize winners being offered a short support slot at the start of the night.
Fronting the band will be vocalist Georgie Clifford, an artist who marries the worlds of classic vocal jazz with a contemporary R&B delivery. Georgie Clifford is an artist whose voice and musicality keep you mesmerised. Having completed her Bachelor of Music Arts in jazz performance at Ara Music Arts, her music took her far and wide: touring the world with UK artist Bruno Major, and working alongside artists such as Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest), and Christian Sands. Here in New Zealand she is no stranger to the stage, working alongside the likes of Tami Neilson, Louis Baker, Marley Sola, and many more.
Dunedin audiences will be familiar with the tenor saxophone sound of Gwynn Reynolds, who recently performed in the “Kind of Blue” concerts and thrilled listeners with his own take on John Coltrane. Reynolds is the Director of the Musical Arts Program at Ara Institute and will be adjudicating the band competition at the DYJF. Reynolds brings with him a suite of instrumentalists from the Christchurch Jazz School, who will be working with our own players in workshops, including Scott Taitoko (trombone), Nick Pitts (piano), Brad Grainger (double bass) and Nikos Kazakos (drums).
The Dunedin Jazz Club is a licensed music venue that has a cash bar. Patrons are encouraged to wear masks when purchasing drinks or when seated. Patrons may need to show identification when purchasing drinks.
